WAKELON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Location: Wake County Public Schools, NC
Budget: $19 million
Size: 99,900 sf
Year Completed: 2007

This prototype building features architecturally exposed structural steel throughout, including interior public spaces and exterior canopies, stair and the unique steel fin and gutter elements. The two story building is framed with composite steel beams at the second floor and steel bar joists at the roof, all supported by steel columns and spread footings. Steel trusses span the dining area and gymnasium, projecting beyond the exterior walls to create dramatic 14 foot overhangs from which the fins and gutters are suspended. The project also includes a free-standing exterior shelter framed with glue laminated wood framing.
