UNC Healthcare

Location: Chapel Hill, NC
Budget: $8 million
Size: 51,600 sf
Year Completed: 2000

UNC Health Care programmed the Wellness Center as a “total lifestyle” facility. It is home to some of the most advanced tools in modern fitness, including an indoor lap pool, an indoor track, aerobics studios, fitness equipment rooms and a multi-purpose gymnasium. The building and exposed steel drop-off canopy curve and roll with the surrounding landscape, clad with traditional brick and large expanses of glazed curtain wall.

The structure is primarily framed with structural steel and spread footings. The steel roof beams were curved to various radii to achieve the desired roof profiles. The pool area is framed with reinforced concrete at the elevated deck level and the sublevel below; curved steel beams frame to the concrete columns at roof level.
