NEW HANOVER REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER

Location: Wilminton, NC
Budget: $66 million
Size: 98,000 sf new construction
Year Completed: 1999

This project included the comprehensive renovation of the existing 11-story main tower, the addition of a two-story corridor and entry pavilion along the front of the existing hospital and a new three-story cancer center addition off the east end of the new corridor. The master plan included a new women’s center to be added off the west end of the new corridor, symmetric to the new addition.

The new structures are framed with structural steel on auger cast concrete piles. Composite slabs on deck are used for the floors and new building roof. The corridor has a slab on grade with concrete knee walls along the sides, an elevated floor level and a roof. The new building includes a basement, two elevated floors and a penthouse. At the existing main tower, a steel framed enclosed mechanical room was added above the roof and two small mechanical rooms added at grade.
