FIRST FLIGHT HIGH SCHOOL

Location: Dare County High School
Budget: $19.8 million
Size: 182,400 sf
Year Completed: 2004

Located on a prominent site adjacent to the Wright Brothers Memorial, this 1,200-student high school was built in the traditional style of Outer Banks architecture.  Academic, administrative and public use spaces are organized around a central commons area.  The two-story building is framed with structural steel founded on concrete spread footings.  Moment frames and shear walls resist 130 mph hurricane winds.  Special features of this project include a 600-seat performing arts auditorium, gymnasium and a 2,500-seat stadium.
