UNC MEDIA BROADCAST CENTER
Location: UNC Chapel Hill, Raleigh, NC
Phase 1 Budget: $15 million
Year Completed: 2019
The UNC Media Broadcast Center is an addition to the existing Koury Natatorium that allows the ACC Network to produce a significant number of events through broadcasts across all production levels. The broadcast center also provides a robust production service (live production and studio services) to campus entities and opportunities for academic partnerships and real-world experience in growing fields for students.
The media center replaces a 1992 steel-framed addition supported by drilled caissons. Demolition included removal of existing steel framing, concrete slab on grade, and grade beams while leaving the tops of the existing caissons undisturbed in order to use them to support the new steel framed structure. LHC worked closely with the architect to ensure the new structure maximized the use of the existed caissons as part of the new foundation system. The new two-story building, with an option to add a future third floor, consists of concrete floor slabs on composite steel deck on structural steel framing supported by a foundation system of the existing caissons, a few new caissons, and new grade beams.
